Filming Locations: Sky High (2005)

Sky High is a 2005 American comedy superhero family film about an airborne school for teenage superheroes. It was directed by Mike Mitchell and written by Paul Hernandez, Robert Schooley, and Mark McCorkle. The starring cast includes Michael Angarano as Will, an incoming freshman at the school; Danielle Panabaker as his best friend; Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston as his parents; Mary Elizabeth Winstead as a popular senior;Steven Strait as Will's rival; and Lynda Carter as Principal Powers. The location for the high school which was actually floating in the air, hence the name, "Sky High" was at Cal State Northridge (my proud alumni) Oviatt Library at 18111 Nordhoff Street Northridge CA. I actually remember being on campus when they filmed this and were constructing the set and I had no idea what was going on. I actually thought the campus was preparing for graduation but I knew it was something else when I saw the movie posters. That was one of those times where I wish I had a camera and my crappy cell phone didnt have a camera which wasnt available at that time. Oh well.

On the day of James Kirk's birth, his father dies on his ship in a last stand against a mysterious alien time-traveling vessel looking for Ambassador Spock, who, in this time, is also a child on Vulcan disdained by his neighbors for his half-human heritage. Twenty-five years later, Kirk has grown into a young troublemaker. Challenged by Captain Christopher Pike to realize his potential in Starfleet, he comes to annoy instructors like young Commander Spock. This movie was filmed throughout LA as described in The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations, Wired.com, and Movie Locations and More sites. Two of those locations were in the San Fernando Valley. The first location might be easily recognizable to most which CSUN (my proud almuni) and the second location is the less recognizable (interior shots only) Anheuser Busch Brewery in Van Nuys.

The Cal State Northridge Delmar T. Oviatt Library at 18111 Nordhoff Street Northridge CA 91330 was used as the backdrop for the Starfleet Academy.

The Anheuser-Busch plant was used for the Enterprise's engine room utilizing the plants massive cooling pipes and other plumbing in the background. The address is 15800 Roscoe Blvd Van Nuys CA 91406.
